ACT IV. TO BE UNRECOGNIZED

For the big world, an unrecognized territory is a dotted line. A footnote. A resolution. A dash.

But maps don’t breathe. People do.

Act IV. Being Unrecognized | The Humans v.21 | Roman Adler

There are maps that do not breathe.

Borges once imagined an empire whose cartographers made a map on a scale of one to one — and it covered the entire earth, turning out to be useless. Such is the fate of any map: the more precise it claims to be, the less life there is in it.

For the big world, an unrecognized territory is a dotted line. A footnote. A resolution. A dash.

But maps don’t breathe. People do.

Here they issue passports that no airport accepts. Here they print money that cannot be exchanged at any currency exchange in the world. Here they draw borders invisible to international law — lines that exist only in the minds of those who drew them and those who honor them. It would seem all this is fiction. A decoration. A simulacrum of statehood. But this shadow is cast by a human. And therefore — it is alive.

Here there is a land surveyor who endlessly knocks on the doors of authorities, but never finds either an entrance or an answer. He exists in a space that does not recognize him.

But the inhabitants of these places are not him. They do not knock. They do not write petitions. They do not wait for the world to deign to enter them into its registers.

They simply live.

Here they pay taxes into a treasury that does not exist. They vote for a government that is not recognized. They grow old under a sky that is not on the globe. They fall in love. They bear children. They take them to school. They see them off to the front. Or they do not welcome them back from the front.

They build houses on land that officially does not exist. They bury their ancestors in cemeteries not entered in any world registry.

Here cemetery land is just as disputed a territory as everything else. But most bitter of all is that even death could not resolve this dispute. Even to die here means to remain unrecognized.

And yet the cemetery blossoms. Here they place crosses, bring flowers, whisper names.

No one will ask the papers whether this land can be loved. Love is not a jurisdiction. It is not ratified.

They are the foundation. That very “unit” without which all geopolitical zeros turn into meaninglessness.

I am not resolving the conflict of statuses. I am capturing the life invisible to many — the life of those who refused to disappear.

A quiet resistance of light in a window that by all reports should be empty. But a lamp is burning. Someone is reading a book. Someone is having supper. Someone is putting a child to bed.

No one asked them whether they wanted to become a fault line. They were asked nothing at all.

Then only one thing remains — to create a home within oneself. And this is the hardest and the greatest thing a human being can do. Not to return home, but to become a home. For oneself. For one’s children. For memory.

They sow dignity where even the right to exist is not recognized. They sow memory where the world prefers to forget. They sow life where, by all reports, there should be only emptiness.

And sprouts come up. In spite of everything. Out of spite. In defiance.

And then the map of the world — not the one on paper, not the one that breathes in dotted lines and footnotes, but the one written by breath, memory, and love — will turn out to be larger and truer than all official atlases.

Because maps don’t breathe. People do.

And as long as they breathe, no fault line can erase them.
